Eisenhower's note, the night before D-Day
The night before the D-Day landings, Dwight Eisenhower wrote a short message to be released if the invasion failed. It took the blame entirely onto himself — "If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone" — and credited the troops for their bravery regardless of outcome.
The invasion succeeded and the note was never used. But it's a near-perfect artifact of the system: at the exact moment self-protection would have been most tempting, Eisenhower drove his self-orientation toward zero. That posture — not any tactic — is what made people follow him into the sea.
An engineer needs the platform team to prioritize her migration — and has no authority over them. Audit: credibility fine, intimacy near zero; they barely know her. Deposit: she spends a sprint fixing two bugs in their backlog that were blocking her anyway, and hands the credit to their lead in the all-hands. Currency: the platform team is measured on incident count — so she frames the migration as retiring their flakiest legacy service. The ask that had died in the backlog for a quarter gets scheduled in a week.
