The other is the real one — who people actually listen to, trust, and follow — and the two overlap less than you'd think. Title buys you compliance.     Audit the trust. Rate a key relationship on credibility, reliability, and intimacy — over self-orientation. The weakest lever is your work.

    Make the deposit. Trust is built in drops: a small promise kept exactly, credit given away, a hard truth told kindly. Deposit before you need anything.

    Lead with their currency. To move someone who doesn't report to you, frame the ask in what they value — not what you need. People help you when helping you helps them.

    Decide clearly, commit openly. Sort the decision (reversible or not), state your confidence as a number, and ask even the dissenters to commit.

    Have the conversation you're avoiding. Name the gap early, with good intent and specific behavior — situation, behavior, impact. The dread is almost always worse than the conversation.

The night before the D-Day landings, Dwight Eisenhower wrote a short message to be released if the invasion failed. It took the blame entirely onto himself — "If any blame or fault attaches to the attempt it is mine alone" — and credited the troops for their bravery regardless of outcome.

The invasion succeeded and the note was never used. But it's a near-perfect artifact of the system: at the exact moment self-protection would have been most tempting, Eisenhower drove his self-orientation toward zero. That posture — not any tactic — is what made people follow him into the sea.
